Robert Petrie

Robert began working at the sheltered workshop at CHS in June 2002. During his tenure in the sheltered workshop, Robert performed multiple jobs such as assembly work, a group enclave setting to include a lawn crew and a janitorial opportunity. As Robert became aware of other community opportunities, he advocated working in the Bloomin’ Gardens Greenhouse as well as working on various construction site clean-up jobs and landscaping opportunities. This gave Robert a taste of what it would be like to obtain a job on his own in the community rather than working alongside other individuals with disabilities in a segregated setting.

As such, Robert strongly advocated for his desire to find a job of his own in the community, and in February 2016 Robert accepted a position at Moore’s Greenhouse. Robert flourished at Moore’s, and when this seasonal job came to an end, he wasted no time in finding another opportunity – this time at McDonald’s where he has maintained his position since July 2016.

Erin Martin is Robert’s store manager. “Robert is an integral part of our team,” she said. “His duties he fulfills each day are a big reason our store looks like it does. He does top notch cleaning to the entire restaurant. Robert visits with new and old customers to make them feel at home.”

Never one to shy away from work and independence, Robert landed a second job cleaning the Sedalia WILS office and has had that position since November 2016! In addition to working two jobs, Robert has continued to advocate for his independence and this last year was able to take steps toward establishing options for his retirement.
